Misdirection
Although you can certainly tell if you’ve got dandruff or not, the condition is easily masked, because it can often resemble so many other possible issues. For instance, dry skin might be confused with dandruff at times. (Dry skin flakes tend to be smaller then dandruff, however.) Also, the highly uncomfortable disease psoriasis can affect the scalp and mimic symptoms of dandruff. In some people, sensitivity to hair care products might create a situation that appears as if it is dandruff (it’s actually a condition called contact dermatitis). So there are plenty of potential ways to mistake something for dandruff. The solution to being sure is knowing the differences in the afflictions.
