Diabetes and Sugar Substitutes
While diabetics generally could not enjoy food and drinks with sugar in them, artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharin could be used in order to allow them to enjoy sweets. These artificial sweeteners are especially important for diabetes sufferers as they generally do not even enter the bloodstream. There are some concerns about the health hazards of such products since at least 1906 but no deleterious effects have ever been conclusively proven from the use of any of the more common artificial sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame.
