Both, depending on the kind of work you want to do. It carries over to lots of facets of the horse world, though, since what a horse eats affects so many aspects of it, from health to energy level to fertility.
depends on who is giving the course, i guess. it would give you a much broader base of knowledge to draw upon. different horses….different requirements. one course wont make you an expert, but will give you lots of information, that us regular folk dont have:)
You could probably be a horse nutritionist, but it would also be a good addition to your overall horse knowledge.
I’m in college for Equine Management and I take a nutrition class. I think it is great to take, you learn so much about digestive issue’s things most people would not know about. You also learn how to get the best out of your feed. You can become a equine/large animal nutritionist, be a consultant for a feed company, or just gain more knowledge if you own a horse or horse business!!
Whether you’re interested in breeding, training, competing, or just riding for pleasure, nutrition info is vital! You can never have too much education.
I once had a yearling with enlarged kneebones because of too much protein in the feed. Different breeds have different requirements, and the use of a horse has a lot to do with what they need. This isn’t something you can get from any book I know of, and it sure isn’t as simple as buying a bag of feed because it’s “cheaper” or “what my friend feeds” etc.
Take the class - even if you never have a career in any area of horses! Your pleasure horse will thank you!
But if you do get a job in any of the above, it will be a huge bonus to your employer and/or clients!
